Lenovo Vibe 3X With 21-Megapixel Camera, Snapdragon 808 SoC Spotted

Lenovo Vibe 3X With 21-Megapixel Camera, Snapdragon 808 SoC Spotted
Looks like Lenovo, which launched phablets and smartphones during IFA 2015, has one more smartphone up its sleeves called the Vibe X3. The handset has not been launched as of yet but has showed up under in a Tenaa (China's Telecommunications Certification Center) listing.
The unannounced Vibe X3, as per thelisting, would run Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out-of-the-box and feature a 5.5-inch full-HD display. A hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor is said to power the handset, paired with 3GB of RAM.
From the looks of it, the Lenovo Vibe X3 will house a fingerprint sensor at the back, below the 21-megapixel rear camera and dual-LED flash. The front-facing camera would include an 8-megapixel sensor. The Vibe X3 is seen sporting dual front-facing speakers as well. It would support 4G LTE connectivity, measure 154x76.49.4mm, and weigh 175 grams. While the right side includes a power button and volume buttons, the left side features a SIM/microSD card slot.
Although the firm has not revealed any price or the launch date of the device, it is expected to hit the shelves soon as it has passed Tenaa certification. Looking at the specifications of the device, the handset is likely to fall in the premium smartphone segment.
Lenovo during its IFA 2015 event launched the Vibe S1, Vibe P1, and Vibe P1m smartphones, and NDTV Gadgets got to spend some time with the smartphones. We also got our hands on the Lenovo Phab and Phab Plus during the trade show. The firm also launched IdeaPad laptops, otherWindows 10 laptops, and Yoga tablets at IFA 2015.

iPhone 7 Tipped to Be Slimmest Yet, Similar to 6.1mm-iPod touch

iPhone 7 Tipped to Be Slimmest Yet, Similar to 6.1mm-iPod touch
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, who is known for his accurate Apple estimations, already has inside information and insight about the next year's iPhone. Three days ahead of Apple's mega event where it is expected to launch theiPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, Kuo noted that the iPhone 7 will be the slimmest iPhone when it launches next year.
Kuo said that for next year's iPhone,Apple plans to approach iPod touch levels of thinness (the fifth-generation iPod touch is 6.1mm-thick), and make the iPhone with a waistline between 6mm and 6.5mm. This will be a huge jump over the existing iPhone models, as the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus are respectively, 6.9mm and 7.1mm thick.
As 9to5Mac further speculates, it appears Apple intends to continue with in-cell panels, and not move to glass screen technology. This, as KGI noted, while limiting Apple from upping the screen resolution to 4K, will provide the thinness Apple requires to trim the waistline of iPhone 7. The in-cell panels comes with touchscreen sensors that are integrated into the LCD panel.
The company's decision to further slim the device raises concerning questions. More often than not, to make a mobile handset thin, companies have to make tradeoffs on the battery capacity of the device, and its sturdiness. Previously, we have seen Apple trimming the size of its handset while moving from the iPhone 5s to the iPhone 6, and making the device significantly less stronger. As a result, multiple users noted bending issues - popularly known as bendgate - in earlier units of the iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6.
But a recent report suggests that Apple has changed the aluminium alloy combination in the iPhone metal shell for the forthcoming generation, adding zinc to make it capable of withstanding immense pressure before bending. Separately, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus aretipped to be built out of Series 7000 aluminium, and be 0.15mm longer and 0.2mm thicker, all of which makes it be stronger.

Micromax Canvas Xpress 2 Review: Priced to Kill

Smartphone prices are dropping rapidly, and it's now possible to get a well-specced device for well under Rs. 10,000. A lot of major smartphone brands are taking this segment seriously, and there are some impressive options available, giving budget buyers serious value for their money. Naturally, the segment would not be complete without Micromax, one of India's top smartphone makers.
The latest budget smartphone from Micromax is the Canvas Xpress 2, which is available exclusively through Flipkart. At Rs. 5,999, it's one of Micromax's cheapest offerings, and has an impressive spec sheet. It also competes directly with the Karbonn Titanium Mach Five (Review |Pictures). We go into detail and find out everything there is to know about the Xpress 2 in our review.
micromax_canvas_xpress2_side_ndtv.jpg
Look and feel
The Micromax Canvas Xpress 2 may be a budget device, but at first glance it appears to be anything but that. Although the device is entirely plastic, the gold strip along the sides appears metallic and gives the phone a premium feel. The 5-inch screen, thin bezels and slimness keep the phone compact and easy to handle, while the use of plastic keeps the weight down as well.
The back of the Xpress 2 features a matte finish, with the camera, flash and logo in a line down the middle from top to bottom. The Micromax logo is gold and designed to match with the gold finish on the sides. This looks great, and adds to the premium vibe that the phone is going for. The volume rocker and power key are on the right edge, the MicroUSB port is on the bottom along with the speakers, and the 3.5mm socket is at the top. On the whole, it's a simple, elegant and classy design that works for the Xpress 2.
The screen of the Micromax Canvas Xpress 2 measures 5 inches from corner to corner, and has a 720x1280 pixel resolution. This makes for a density of 294 pixels per inch, which keeps things sharp and detailed. The screen itself has good colour reproduction, brightness and sunlight legibility. What really stands out is the motion-handling ability of the Xpress 2, which makes for smooth, flowing video, even at high encoding rates. It's an excellent display for the price.
micromax_canvas_xpress2_back_ndtv.jpg
Specifications and software
For a budget device, the Micromax Canvas Xpress 2 has a decent spec sheet. Apart from the previously mentioned 5-inch 720p screen, the device features a 2,500mAh user-replaceable battery, a 1.4GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6592M SoC, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage (expandable by 32GB with a microSD card), and dual-SIM connectivity with 3G support on the primary SIM slot.
It's important to note that while the internal storage is claimed to be 8GB, the actual amount of space listed by the device is just shy of 5GB. This makes for just slightly over 4GB of actual user-accessible storage. While media can be stored on a microSD card, you might have space issues when downloading and installing games and apps.
The Micromax Canvas Xpress 2 runs Android 4.4.2 (KitKat), at a time when the vast majority of sub-Rs. 10,000 Android smartphones come with Android 5.0 (Lollipop). A sticker on the box states that the Canvas Xpress 2 is upgradeable to Android Lollipop, but a quick check on the system update screen shows that no such update is available yet.
micromax_canvas_xpress2_bottom_ndtv.jpg
The user interface is minimalistic and closely resembles the stock UI of Android KitKat. There's very little in the way of customisation, but all the basic settings and controls are present. With the price in mind, we found the user interface to be efficient and comfortable, and the audience for this device isn't likely to be disappointed.
The Micromax Canvas Xpress 2 comes with a large bouquet of pre-installed apps and services. The system also pushes advertisements onto your phone, which can be extremely irritating. Fortunately, most of these apps can be uninstalled. The apps that cannot be uninstalled are App Center, an app marketplace full of apps pushed by Micromax; and M!Live, a shortcut which essentially only opens Micromax's website on your smartphone.
micromax_canvas_xpress2_top_ndtv.jpg
Camera
The Canvas Xpress 2 features a 13-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel secondary camera. While this makes for very high-resolution pictures, the sensor seems to have serious issues with detail and sharpness. While pictures appear great at first, zooming in reveals serious flaws the ability of the sensor to accurately capture pictures.
However, colour and lighting are handled well. Open-environment images are usually free of noise and have excellent white levels, so colours don't appear to be washed out and oversaturated. Low-light shots are satisfactory at best, but it's unfair to expect more than this of a device in this price range.
micromax_canvas_xpress_2_camerashot_ndtv.jpg
The camera application is almost identical to Google's popular Camera app, and as a result has all settings and modes conveniently placed around the screen. Easy settings for flash, camera switching and various modes, as well as quick access to video and gallery are the highlights here. The only complaint is a slightly small viewfinder area, due to the presence of large black bars at the edges of the screen.
micromax_canvas_xpress2_camera_ndtv.jpg
Performance
The Micromax Canvas Xpress 2 is a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to performance. While the device performed admirably with our test videos and in our usual suite of benchmarks, it was less satisfactory with day-to-day performance and gaming. Issues with the device included sluggishness with the user interface, considerable delay when opening apps, and lag issues while gaming. Graphics- and processor-intensive games such as Angry Birds 2 and Dead Trigger 2 did not work smoothly, with lag often interfering with the gameplay. Both games also heavily drained the battery of the device and caused slight heating issues.
Benchmark scores were higher than we expected from a phone in this price range. AnTuTu and Quadrant returned scores of 28,560 and 10,864 respectively, while GFXBench and 3DMark produced scores of 16fps and 6,365 each. Although the device was usually satisfactory in terms of benchmark scores, real-world performance issues cropped up too often to ignore.
The phone's basic functions worked without any trouble. Call quality, signal strength and Wi-Fi strength were all decent. Sound output from the speaker was slightly below par, however. A big disappointment was the Xpress 2's performance in our battery test. The phone ran for only 6 hours, 5 minutes in our video loop test, and general battery consumption seemed to be much higher than it should be. The phone had trouble lasting even a whole day with ordinary usage, and needed to be plugged into a charger by evening.
micromax_canvas_xpress2_sims_ndtv.jpg
Verdict
The entry-level smartphone segment is an important place to be for manufacturers, and Micromax is trying to make its presence felt with the Canvas Xpress 2. The device looks good, is compact and easy to handle, and has all of the basics firmly in place. It offers specifications that you'd expect to see on phones that cost a lot more, which makes it an attractive option for budget buyers.
However, when compared to the identically-priced Karbonn Titanium Mach Five, it has some flaws. Sub-par performance with graphically intensive tasks and general sluggishness with running apps and games are its biggest weaknesses. The camera, while better on paper, is actually poor in capturing detail and definition. RAM and internal storage are both on the low side, which will affect general usability of the device. Above all, the device has no standout features or USPs.
If you're looking for a simple entry-level smartphone that looks good, the Micromax Canvas Xpress 2 is a viable option. It will serve you well if you stick to basic tasks and use only it for occasional photography. However if you're looking for a bit more, we suggest you either consider the Karbonn Titanium Mach Five, or spend a bit more and pick up a Yu Yuphoria.

Oppo R7 Plus hands-on: Mighty big, also mighty expensive

AdTech Ad
Our last encounter with an all-metal 'big' phone was when we tried and tested the Samsung Galaxy A8. Our fresh encounter with an all-metal 'big' phone involves a relatively lesser known company from China of the name Oppo. The phone in question here is the R7 Plus that was launched in India on Wednesday at a price of Rs.29,990 and will go on sale starting September 25.
Both the Samsung Galaxy A8 (5.7-inch) and the Oppo R7 Plus (6-inch) aspire to do something similar, which is offering a mid-range phablet with a mid-range processor and promising camera capabilities to buyers. If you dig inside a little, you'll find that both these phones have more or less similar specifications set as well. And on the outside, well, there is of course the fingerprint scanner (in addition to metal and everything), that's becoming quite the norm these days.
There was a time when Oppo phones were slim, heck they were 'super' slim if you may. The R5 was the slimmest phone in town - for a brief period though - but all that slimness also came at a price, read compromise. With time, the company has grown only wiser, it seems. The result, well, the R7 Plus isn't the slimmest in town anymore. The R7 Plus (along with the R7) is the supposed successor to the R5, and was supposed to be super slim too had Oppo gone that way. But, it hasn't. Not that we are complaining.
At 7.8mm and 192 grams, the R7 Plus now figures in the list of 'chunkier' phones, our comparison being with the Galaxy A8 and the Apple iPhone 6 Plus. That said, it's still a pretty well manageable handset, particularly when you consider it's a 6-incher. For a 6-inch phone, it still looks (and feels) quite well put out and easy to operate. But then of course, this is not a phone for people with small hands, or those that loathe 'big' phablets.
The R7 Plus boasts of an all-metal uni-body design - 91 per cent metal, says Oppo - with the power button on the right while the volume rockers on the left. The front panel is a slightly raised platform with rounded glass edges - Oppo calls it the 2.5D arc-edge screen - making it look as if it's an entirely different piece. The front comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.
The design of the Oppo R7 is decent: keeps things simple and doesn't go overboard. We still prefer Samsung's design (and weight) of the Galaxy A8 more than this one though.
The fingerprint scanner module on the R7 Plus is located on the back under the camera sensor, something that can be a hit or miss placement depending on how you hold your phone.
The Oppo R7 Plus comes with a 6-inch FullHD IPS Super AMOLED display with a 1080x1920 pixels resolution and 367 ppi pixel density. This is more or less the same deal you get on the Galaxy A8 (5.7-inch FullHD and 386 ppi). While we did test the R7 Plus under low light conditions, we were pretty satisfied with its display output: it was bright and colour saturation was mostly spot-on. We liked that it had better viewing angles than the A8 and wasn't prone to the gradual tinting of the screen when viewing it at an angle.
The screen is however prone to fingerprint and smudge.
The Oppo R7 Plus is powered by a 1.5GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. The phone is expandable by up to 128GB via microSD card. The Snapdragon 615 could be a deal breaker for many since it's a mid-range processor and the R7 Plus costs a good odd Rs.30,000. You're getting cheaper phones with better processors these days. We found the Galaxy A8's Exynos 5430 a major deal breaker in our review since that one felt underpowered when compared with rivals. The Snapdragon 615 is more or less equivalent to the Exynos 5430 (on paper) and we foresee more or less similar results in usage as well.
In our brief usage, we found the R7 Plus to be fairly nippy and responsive (with some heating). But more on that in our detailed review.
The R7 Plus runs Android 5.1-based ColorOS 2.1 out-of-the-box which like most Chinese UIs is heavily inspired from Apple's iOS with few Oppo nuggets dropped in here and there.

On the camera front, it sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with laser autofocus and dualLED flash. There's also an 8-megapixel camera up-front.
We clicked some photos at the launch event, and the result (in low light) was average at best.
Although the phone was fairly quick to focus (owing to laser focus tech), images clicked had noise and loss of detail was quite evident.
The R7 Plus supports 4G LTE on both SIMs and features one hybrid card slot that you can use either to put SIM or microSD.
It is backed by a 4,100 mAh battery which is obviously huge to look at on paper. The phone also supports Oppo's proprietary VOOC fast charging technology.

There you go. While our first impressions of the Oppo R7 Plus have been largely positive, we still need more time with the phone to give out a final verdict. The R7 Plus is a plus-sized phablet with a well to-do spec sheet. But, it's expensive. The question is would you as a buyer prefer Samsung - a well known company - and buy its Galaxy A8 (Rs.32,500) or try out a relatively lesser known brand, Oppo and go for its R7 Plus (Rs.29,900).

Xolo Black first impressions

At an event in New Delhi, Indian handset brand Xolo unveiled the first smartphone part of its new Black range. The phone has also been named Black and is positioned as a premium budget smartphone in the sub-Rs 15,000 segment. We got a chance to spend a few minutes with the phone and here's a quick hands-on focusing on its strengths and weaknesses...

True to its name, the Xolo Black features a dark polycarbonate frame with soft rounded edges and corners, and front and rear glass panels, giving it a premium look. While the panels feature Corning's Gorilla Glass 3 protection to save the device from scratches, the company emphasized on how it has used an oleophobic coating to keep smudges away. However, in our brief hands-on time with the phone, we found that it was very prone to smudging (also apparent in the pictures). The design is not really new and we've seen phones such as the Huawei Honor 6 and 6 Plus sport similar form factors.

The volume rocker keys and the power key are all placed at the right edge of the phone and offer above-average tactile feedback. The power key also features a breathing light for notifications which pulses in different colours when you receive a notification.

The micro-USB port sits at the bottom along with holes drilled for the speaker outlet on either sides taking some inspiration from new iPhones, while the 3.5mm headset jack is at the top.

The left edge has a dual-sim(micro+nano)/single-sim+microSD card hybrid tray. This means you can use two sim cards or one sim card and a micro-USB card. This is a convenient solution

At 155.5x76.6x7.3mm, the Xolo Black is not really designed for one hand use, mainly due to its 5.5-inch display. The display panel is a full-HD (1080x1920p) OGS IPS one. We found the display to be very reflective though the viewing angles appeared to be wide enough to prevent colour distortion when not viewing the screen head-on. The touch panel was also responsive on the demo unit.

Below the display, there are three backlit, capacitive navigation keys, while the 5MP front camera and the front flash are placed above it.

The glass back features the dual-camera lenses, a chroma flash and Xolo and Hive branding.

Overall, the build quality looks decent for a phone priced at Rs 12,999.

Xolo Black is powered by a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor and 2GB RAM. The phone comes with 16GB internal storage optionally expandable up to 32GB via microSD cards(hybrid sim card). It has a 3200mAh battery and supports Quick Charge 1.0 for faster charging. In terms if connectivity, the dual-sim device supports 4G LTE (both Indian bands), 3G, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS.

The phone runs HIVE UI Atlas, Xolo's custom UI based on Android 5.0 and features Material Design elements. The custom UI offers enhancements such as 'Underground' a space for storing private apps and data, 'Reading mode' which turns the display greyscale for easy reading, and a new Comet browser.

As mentioned, the Black comes with a dual rear camera module in employing a combination of 13MP and 2MP lenses. The secondary camera works with the primary one to offer fast focus and depth mapping for post-capture image processing to give a DSLR-like bokeh or depth effect to pictures. The phone's UbiFocus feature in allows users to focus and refocus objects after the image has been captured leveraging the secondary camera.

As per Xolo, the Chroma Flash enables the phone camera to retain natural colours and skin tones even in low light condition, which otherwise are over-exposed due to use of flash in such conditions.

The phone's Gallery app features integration with 'Photo Studio' powered by Adobe and offers editing features including various filters.

At its current price, the phone competes with the likes of the Xiaomi Mi 4i, ZTE NUbia mini and Lenovo K3 Note. We'll soon have a detailed review of the phone covering the features and performance in detail to help you know if it's a good buy.
